Halloween Fun and Food

Well, this weekend we had the Ward Halloween party. Our costumes weren’t too excited but I was amazed that almost everyone that showed up actually did dress up. It was fun. I carved a pumpkin and one of Ry’s friends from work came with. He is a really nice guy and I think he had a good time. But, my costume wasn’t much and I couldn’t tell you exactly what I was except maybe a go-go girl. We found my dress at a thrift store. It looks authentic. Ry was a computer engineer from the beginning years of Micron back in the 30’s! ha! Oh but I didn’t care about my costume b/c I was more worried about bike shopping! Thats right; my hubby really loved mountain biking and about a month ago I got my first bike, but after riding it a couple of times, Ry thought I needed an upgrade. We got a really good deal and now he is jealous of my bike! Thanks honey! I will post some pics the next time we get to go. It is such a great thing to do together.

Well I just found out that we don’t actually have a pic of us in our costumes. Sorry! But here is a pic of our friends. This is the first costume (hers) that me and my little company, Make It Sew, produced!picture-006.jpg

And here is the whole ward! It is an awesome ward!

Culture at Work

Friday’s are usually pretty busy for us but its also the last day of the week and that means I don’t want to do much on our down time. I better give a little overview about what I do though. I am a Chiropractic assistant at a small, one doctor, practice. My duties include pretty much everything like taking out the trash, medical billing, taking care of patients, scheduling, and even giving the patients therapy every once in a while. The medical world is totally new to me but I am really enjoying it. I know that alot of people don’t trust chiropractic care, but luckily the doctor I work for is one of the sane ones so he doesn’t try to adjust your spine with ‘energy’ or anything. The only benefit I get by working here is actually chiropractic care which I didn’t know I needed until coming here. I didn’t know that migraines could be caused by a subluxation (a misalignment) in the spine. But during my consultation I informed the doctor that I have headaches 2-3 times a week! That is alot of pill popping I was doing. When I saw my x-rays it was like an epiphany happened. I have an inverse curve in my neck that irritates the nerves around my neck and causes headaches. Since I have been getting treatment I only have a headache about every two weeks. It is such a relief! No matter what you convince yourself; there is no such thing as an “everyday, normal” headache. That is not normal at all.

But the purpose of this is really to tell a little about the doctor I work for. Dr. Mofid immigrated to the United States from Iran when he was 16 in the 1960s; this was just before the government was taken over by a religious dictator. He moved to NYC to study ballet (yes, ballet!) and began dancing in the NYC ballet when he was 19. That career lasted for a while until an injury introduced him to Chiropractic care. Eventually he went to medical school and ended up in Boise because he enjoys hunting and fishing. Yes that is right; a hunting and fishy male ballerina! It was crazy b/c when I took this job I was a little apprehensive about working alone with a doctor. So where do you go when you want info-Google. So I googled the doctor and I got all this stuff for a ballet dancer with the same name. Then I flipped when I learned it was him! I thought it was just a popular Iranian name. And I didn’t find any other creepy information. And it has been a great job. I really enjoy working for Dr. Mofid. He is just a good person and a good boss. One interesting thing is that we get a good amount of culture coming through; a guess people from other countries feel better about coming here. So a little while ago, this one of our awesome Iraqi patients was talking with Dr. Mofid about invading eachothers countries! It was cracking me up. And yesterday I had homemade Bachlava from one of our patients visiting from Albania. I never know who I am going to meet or what is going to happen!

The main reason I love my job is because my hours are 8-6. I was so frustrated when I was looking for a job b/c I couldn’t find one that would allow me time to spend with my husband. That is surprisingly hard when you don’t have a degree! But I heard a talk in church about sincere prayer. This was at the end of my second desperate week of looking (that was a long time for me!) and I sincerely prayed to my Heavenly Father for that opportunity to find a job that would still let me see Ry as often as possible. Then next day I spent all day applying for jobs and the next day I got this one. Not only is it good hours but it is giving me skills I can take with me. I know our prayers are answered; especially if it is something that is best for our families.

Just a little “Suite”

The first weekend of October, my boss sent me to Salt Lake City to a conference. My plane ticket and hotel room were free so Ry and I thought it might be a fun gettaway weekend for us. So we picked up a ticket for him and were excited to know that it was also General Conference weekend so maybe we could get in. Well, the hotel, to say the least, wasn’t the best place in the world. It was the Sheraton City Center so it was big and nice but the service was a little…weird. I went Thursday night without Ry and awoke to a huge bill in my room the next morning; with somebody elses name on it. So I took it to the front desk and got them really confused. The were like “umm, you didn’t stay in this room, you are supposed to be in room 118.” Me- “No, I slept in that room last night and my stuff is in there now.” It took me about 5 minutes to convince them that is where I stayed. They never actually figured out how that all happened. Then the girl told me that the room I am supposedly checked into is a suite with a jacuzzi. “Would you like to switch rooms?” Uhhh…let me think, free room with personal hot tub…I didn’t have to think to long. Relaxing in the hot tub is one of my and my hubby’s favorite past times. We get in our apt. hot tub almost everyday. That is one of our favorite things to do together. So, we had a great weekend. Our Room was huge! All thanks to my boss. By the way; it was a really great conference for my job and things are going really well. We didn’t get into conference, but it was a great experience to be in Salt Lake at that time and we did watch a session in the Joseph Smith Center. Take a look at our jaccuzzi:

Crazy Sexy Cancer

I don’t know if anyone reading my blog has heard of this documentary, but it is about a girl who was diagnosed with a cancer that is incurable but that can also be stabilized. She made this documentary on her own; it is incredible. I saw it first on TLC and then I crossed over her on Oprah (I promise it was an accident!) along with another man who is dying from cancer named Randy Pausch. Mr. Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon and gave his “last lecture” about reaching your childhood dreams. This lecture has been viewed by over a million people on the internet. Both of their messages are simple and extremely important; we must live life in the moment to its fullest potential; be grateful for everything; don’t take anything for granted. It is amazing to me how they overcome pity and anger and just decided to live life to the fullest! One important point is that we can’t go through our life complaining; we can be Tigger or Eore. Their examples have made such an impression on me; if only we could live life like that. Randy only has a few more months to live and is leaving his three sons and wife; he wrote this lecture for his three boys. It is great and teaches alot of principles that we are familiar with. Oh and by the way it is not a downer in any way shape or form. :) Also, Crazy Sexy Cancer airs on TLC again on October 24.

Here is a sneak peak at his lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HqdnjgkExY

But since I know we have all the time in the world here is the link to the entire hour lecture. : http://www.etc.cmu.edu/global_news/?q=node/42

My Place of Solitude and History

This is my home, the farm where my parents live that has been in our family for about 130 years. I can’t wait to go visit for Thanksgiving!

Teaching Sunday School

There are some callings in the church that are quite intimidating if you have not served in that position before. I imagine that by the end of my life I will serve in just about every position a woman can but that doesn’t change the desire of wanting to do all of them. Sunday school was like that for me. I have always wanted to teach (if you know me well, you know I love being the center of attention) but I hoped to start in Relief Society, a less intimidating setting and a place where you don’t have to be a scriptorian necessarily. But, when we moved to Boise, I had no clue what I would be doing. I was excited though and ready for a calling after a month. I love having a calling. I love serving, but I am not the best person about seeking out for service; with a calling, I know exactly what I am supposed to do and do it as best I can. Then the bishoped cornered us and, to my utter amazement, truly, I was called to be one of two Sunday School teachers! Ahhhh! I was really suprised but I guess it was coming to me because that was the only thing, the only place I didn’t want to start. But it has truly been a great experience so far. I have learned a great deal more from the scriptures than I have before. Even just studying weekly the member study guide will greatly increase your scripture studying experience.

My Blogging Conversion

When my husband started his blog last summer, I honestly never even knew that people did this. I had never read or seen one before. Don’t get me wrong, I know how to use computers, I guess I am just a little behind in the internet world. But I never thought I would want to do that. Then, my brother, who I adore, left his family to go serve in Qatar for the Air Force. Don’t be worried, it is a relatively safe place to be, especially over there, but you just really never know. So my sister-in-law started a blog, so we could all keep up with him since talking on the phone isn’t really an option. So once that started, I was hooked! First of all, I think I have spent about maybe a total of two weeks with KM, maybe more, but it doesn’t seem like it. Life is always so crazy when the whole fam is together. But with her blog, I really have felt like I am getting to know her. Not to mention that writing brings out a hidden personality in each of us. I have enjoyed tracking her daily experiences and of course, love seeing and hearing about their cute little kids. But KM, my sister-in-law, has really helped me feel inspired. She recently went on a 3-day walk for breast cancer and I cried every time I read her experiences. I am hoping to arrange my own team for the San Francisco walk in September 2008 and inspire others through my blog as well. So, I am truly converted to blogging and thought I would try it out myself. Now I am studying my other sisters-in-law blogs as well to get to know them better. And maybe you can get a little insight into who I am as well.

The other reason I have been putting it off is because I feel like my life is rather calm or boring maybe. I mean, we don’t have kids and everything is pretty normal so what do I have to say?! But having a blog makes me feel like I do have something to say about everything and anything.
